So one of my fears is throwing a party that no one comes to. In 2009 I jumped in with both feet, despite that fear, and started planning the Socials: The Women’s Business Socials. I hosted 11 of them total, including one in London. The first Women’s Business Social in February had 13 attendees and the largest one to date at Vesta had approximately 100! All the rest have been somewhere in the middle, averaging 60-80 women in business.
What impresses me most: people’s commitment to attend, meet people, promote their work, and share it with their friends. About a quarter of the attendees don’t know me personally, they’re there because someone encouraged them to attend.
Women I know come up to me and say “Oh, I had such a good time at the last Social.” And I always ask, “Did you meet anyone that can help you with you business?” or “Have you made any sales as a result of attending the Socials.” So far, the overwhelming response has been an enthusiastic YES.
I’ll be adding some more features to the No More Nylons website, so people can add their testimonials or a little video snippet which I think will be a cool addition, to keep it personal and real.
My intention was to create an event that I’d want to attend. I figured if I would want to show up, so would other people. I think “networking events” get a weird reputation for having to spit out an elevator speech or 30 second commercial. I never wanted to attend those, they make me gag. I wanted something more like an intimate and casual cocktail party where people were talking about CRM’s, online webstores and local marketing strategies. Good times…
