I know you’re busy and don’t have time for this. But guess what. Your professional network could be helping you in so many ways, if you let them! I’ve always said, “The best time to network is when you have something to give.” Don’t wait until you need something! Here are 3 steps to build your professional network now:
- Meet with someone significant in your network. Get out from behind your desk and take someone to coffee, lunch, happy hour, for a walk around the park – whatever you like – every week. Doing just this one tip creates 50 opportunities a year to have new conversations.
- Put the stacks to work. Go through the stacks of business cards you’ve collected and reconnect. Either email them or send an invite to stay connected on social networks such as LinkedIn, Facebook, or Twitter. BONUS Send a handwritten card to continue to stay in touch. “Hi, Remember me, we spoke at the XYZ event.” Yes, it’s that simple.
- Address Book Actions. Smart phones allow you to add recent calls and contact information to your phone’s address book. I like to add the person’s photo to their contact record on my iPhone, too. That way I can put a name with a face immediately.
KEEP SHOWING UP in person, in print and online. You don’t need to do all of these tips at once. Build them into your regular habits, and you’ll see the results of your community growing stronger and larger.
Let me know how this works for you.
